fold faq The Bologna Reform process

Following the Bologna Reform process – the most comprehensive reform of European tertiary institutes in the past decade – universities and universities of applied sciences have started to introduce masters and bachelors degrees that conform to the Anglo-American tertiary system. Switzerland introduced its first bachelors degrees in 2005. From September 2008, Swiss universities of applied sciences will offer students bachelors degrees and a range of so-called consecutive master degrees. These are designed for highly motivated students with above-average abilities who wish to gain a second academic qualification and who have a serious interest in research.

fold faq The consecutive masters programs

Complementary to the bachelors degrees, the consecutive masters degrees offer advanced study in a specialist area, allowing students to deepen their scientific competence while continuing to gain practical experience. The degrees also provide students with in-depth analytical and research skills, and prepare them for professional opportunities in middle and upper management.

fold faq All masters are not equal

The new consecutive masters programs represent an advanced level in the tertiary system and should not be confused with the MAS (Master of Advanced Studies) or the MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree programs. The MAS degree program is a continuing education course that recognizes students' practical experience. The MBA is an additional course of study in business administration designed primarily for students from other academic disciplines; MBA students must have previous work experience. The MBA is also a continuing education course.
